How Dominoes Work

A domino is a small rectangular block, either wooden or plastic, with a line down the middle that separates it into two squares. Each end of the domino has a number of spots, called pips, that are similar to those on dice. Traditional domino sets contain 28 dominoes, but larger sets are available. The dominoes can be used in a variety of games.

The simplest domino game involves laying a single tile on the table and then placing other tiles in the right places so that the exposed ends of all the tiles match up. When all the matching ends touch, a player scores points for the whole chain of dominoes. The first tile played must be a doublet (either one side to the other or both sides the same) and all subsequent tiles must be placed at right angles to that first doublet to form a cross.

Physicist Stephen Morris at the University of Toronto says that when you stand a domino upright, it stores potential energy. But when you push it over, much of that potential energy is converted to kinetic energy, or the energy of motion. That energy travels down the line of dominoes to the next domino, which then has kinetic energy and so on. The last domino is knocked over by the kinetic energy of all the previous dominoes.

Dominos are used in many different ways, including for icebreaker activities, team building exercises and strategic planning meetings. They are also often used in teaching children math skills and counting. The game has even been used to help students develop critical thinking and communication skills. The earliest mention of the word “domino” dates to 1750, but its use in English and French was much earlier than that. The word may have been derived from the French term for a long, hooded cloak worn with an eye mask at a masquerade.
